5 Things to Know Before Joining Nourished Market
Nicole BimberShare
Before purchasing with Nourished Market, there are a few things we think you should know. It could be easily assumed that we are just another farmer's market, farm, or grocery store alternative. But, the experience we provide is actually a unique service that many households end up loving it. If you're used to shopping at a grocery store, then there are some differences about shopping this way you may benefit from knowing ahead of time.
Take It Slow
Most folks transition at a slow pace. You may start with a couple dozen eggs, some ground beef, a and a block of raw cheese. Maybe the following week you order the cultured butter, a produce box, and some pasture raised chicken. This isn't about replacing everything at once. Take it at your own pace and really taste the difference in the products as you begin to try new things.
Can't change as much as you'd like to as fast as you'd like to? This is normal. We all have limitations, responsibilities, budgets, and others to consider when we make choices. Don't beat yourself up for wanting to make better food choices but needing to plan to make it fit in your lifestyle or budget. Do what you can when you can and take the changes at a pace that makes sense for you wherever you are on your journey.

Food May Look a Bit Different
You should expect a deep, rich yellow/orange color in your pasture-raised eggs yolks. Sometimes the pale yolk is found, usually because a chicken made un-optimal food choices that particular day. There isn't perfect uniformity in any of these products, and that's part of the fun of eating this way. Produce is lush and beautiful, but your spinach might be a more hardy variety to survive the tough Texas conditions. You may end up with a lighter color cucumber or a variety of colored tomatoes for the same reason. Farming in Texas is not an easy task, and produce is no exception. Arguably it is the most difficult thing to grow here.
You won't find tomatoes available in the winter months, or cilantro in the thick of summer when it's all bolted. Your meat will come in frozen packages. Your milk will have more or less cream content as the seasons change due to the change in the grass at any given time of year.
These are all normal variations that are found in farming and therefore in what you'll experience with products like the ones we provide.

Some Things Will Taste Different
Dairy that you taste in the fall season transitioning into winter will undoubtedly have a different taste to it than dairy that is produced in the lush spring season when green grass is abundant. Not everyone will notice this subtle change, but many do. It's not a bad change, just different. Sometimes cattle get into a pesky weed on a pasture that the farmers missed, and that can also effect how milk tastes.
Beef will taste different, dependent on how a rancher manages their feed. Grass-fed and finished beef tends to result in a “gamier” and tougher end result that many aren't a fan of. However, there are plenty of people that this isn't an issue for.
Our family personally enjoy ground beef, primal ground beef, and roasts happily from 100% grass-fed beef. But, if we want a steak we are definitely going to choose grain-supplemented grass-fed beef every time. This is our personal choice, sometimes we change that up but it all comes down to what works best for us.
Fresh produce is going provide a striking difference in what you can find in the grocery store. Unfortunately, some farmer's market tables that aren't always as fresh as they might appear. We love farmer's markets and don't want to speak harshly, but they run into similar issues with industrialized farmed produce as the stores do when it comes to demand. They have to pack up enough product to feed the masses that come through a market, this isn't always what it seems. The best way to know what you're getting at any farmers market is the same as any other local sourcing — get to know your farmer and shake their hands. Ask questions and seek to understand their unique methods.

You May Need to Get Creative
A produce box or bag can have something you may have never seen before from time to time. This is a great way to try new recipes or provide nutrients into your diet you might otherwise have avoided or ignored. Sometimes a recipe will call for broccoli and you have Brussels sprouts instead. This is an opportunity to flex your creative muscles (we all have them) and introduce more variety into your healthy eating lifestyle.
Your Routine Will Change Quickly
Home delivery takes out a lot of the inconvenience of sourcing farm-fresh groceries and how to get it in your kitchen. Most of our customers say they want to make better choices for their home and lifestyles, but it isn't always convenient. Having trusted nourishing products delivered to doorsteps makes having a healthy household nearly effortless. If all that is needed on your end is to place your order each week and we do the rest, I can't imagine an easier way to support your healthy lifestyle and support local farmers while doing it.
